truman World War II began to take shape when Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany on January 30, 1930. Soon after, the German Parliament suspended the constitution making Hitler Fuhrer and dictator. Hitler was angered by the Treaty of Versailles and he blamed Germany’s defeat on the Communists and the Jews. In 1934, Hitler announced a program of rearmament that violated the Treaty of Versailles. At the same time Mussolini was building a powerful army in Italy and threatened to invade Ethiopia. In may 1935, Italy invaded Ethiopia and quickly overwhelmed their weak defenses. This action made Congress pass a Neutrality Act that authorized the president to stop all arms shipments to nations at war. In 1936, Mussolini joined forces with Hitler to form the Rome-Berlin Axis. During the buildup of the war the United States had the intention to stay neutral. Roosevelt stated, â€Å"We are not isolationists except in so far as we seek to isolate ourselves completely from war.† Isolation policies became more difficult when Franco started a civil war in Spain with the aid a Germany and Italy. Over 3000 Americans joined the loyalist cause and fought in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade to oppose fascism in Spain. As a show of neutrality, the U.S. passed another Neutrality Act making it illegal for American citizens to travel on ships of countries at war. This act also made nonmilitary items available to other nations on a cash and carry basis only. In 1936, Hitler seized the previously demilitarized zone of the Rhineland and in 1938 he annexed Austria. Six months later he demanded the Sudetland which Britain and France granted him in return for an agreement that Germany make no more territorial advances. Within six months Hitler’s forces took Czechoslovakia. August 23, 1939 brought a Nazi-Soviet pact. One week later Hitler attacked Poland officially beginning World War II. Britain and France came to Poland’s defense. Also in 1939, Albert Einstein warned Roosevelt that German scientists were building an atomic bomb. Roosevelt authorized the establishment of the Manhattan Project. The German blitzkrieg rushed through Europe overwhelming Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. Soon after the Germans invaded France which led to the French surrender in June of 1940. Meanwhile the U.S. approved shipments of 50 old American destroyers to Britain in return for the right to establish naval bases in British territory.

The Expectancy Theory of Motivation One of the most widely accepted theories of motivation is Victor Vroom’s Expectancy Theory. â€Å"Expectancy theory argues that the strength of a tendency to act in a certain way depends on the strength of an expectation that the act will be followed by a given outcome and on the attractiveness of that outcome to the individual.† (Robbins & Judge, 2007, p.208) [i] In other words, employees will have the motivation to put forth a strong effort, if: They believe the effort will give them positive recognition. (This is called the â€Å"effort-performance† relationship.) That positive recognition must then lead to some kind of desirable reward, such as more money or an increase in status or power. (This is called the â€Å"performance-reward† relationship.) That reward must also be something that fulfills a personal goal for the employee. (This is called the â€Å"rewards-personal goals† relationship.) All three components need to be present for an individual to exert the kind of effort needed to be considered an intense motivation for action and performance of a duty or task. Let’s consider the following example: A company that produces a high quality audio products has recently introduced a new production process in an effort to help the employees meet a goal of high production standards. Supervisor A’s team of employees are not doing well with the production process. Some do not strive to master the process, those that have mastered it are not putting forth effort to reach the goals, and even top-producers don’t seem interested in achieving the goals. After speaking to some of Supervisor A’s team, Supervisor B has discovered that the following concerns are expressed by the team: Some do not feel they can be successful because they believe lack the dexterity needed to implement the process. Some feel that it is not worth the putting forth the extra effort to reach the goals because there is no difference in salary increase for those that meet the goals and those that do not. They believe that performance has to be very slow before it affects the rate of pay. They also say that when a bonus is given, after the withholdings are taken out, the bonus is so small that overtime actually is seen as better way to earn more money than trying to earn a bonus. This scenario lends itself to the perfect situation to implement the expectancy theory of motivation. The employees feel: That there is no recognition for achieving the goal. That there is no reward for achieving the goal. Since there is no recognition or reward, there is no opportunity for employees to evaluated their personal goals to see if reaching the performance goal will help to fulfill a personal goal. The company could implement the expectancy theory by enacting the following steps: Create a specific recognition for those that master process. For those that master the process bonuses can be implemented that exceed those monetary rewards that overtime would bring. Personally interview each employee to discover what their employment goals are and create a personalized plan to reach those goals, make mastering the process one of those steps needed to reach the personal goal. This plan would address all three components of the expectancy theory. However the plan should not be created as one-time policy implementation. I know this is a paradox, and I'm rather proud because it is true. Passivity has been a lifelong threat, laziness a constant lure in my search for identity. This world begs me to succumb to existing in the image of someone else, it asks only that I slip silently and blindly into the niche it provides instead of carving my own. I required a long time to work up courage to fight for the serenity I had glimpsed in hot summer woods and in lovingly handled books read late until the early morning. Doubt had established itself in my mind at some early age, when or why I do not know, and I could trust any person or group more than myself. Doubt begat fear, and fear gave birth to obscuring myself from the eyes of the world while I was a child. Now, I am dedicated to the fight, after over five years of fear and immobility. I rejected the easiest way out of life, and demanded truth. I strengthened my body as I strengthened my mind against the attacks I faced. When I was fifteen I started Tae Kwon Do, the martial arts class that was offered through my school. I learned more about blocking, kicking, and punching in the first two weeks of that class than I had known my entire life. My once powerless body, petite and thin, could knock the wind out of someone with a well placed punch, and I could kick people taller than me in the head. So what I could do, I did, and now my friends instinctively block when they see me grin mischievously in their direction. I am content to know I have taught them something useful. Last spring for the third time in a row, I shakily accepted my teacher's hand as he congratulated me on second place in women's division sparring. It was a bittersweet triumph, three times now I have lost to the same girl. She has become an icon for everything I wish to triumph over in this world. She is beautiful, hair like black silk, impeccable taste in clothing,makeup like a Renaissance painting, and average when it comes to everything else. I watch her silently stride into art class on three inch heels, skirt above her knee, no runs in her stockings, and manicured nails smoothing invisible wrinkles from he shirt. I look down at myself, one of my shirt buttons missing, securely replaced with a safety pin, my comfortable green pants provide freedom of movement if little style, and my sturdy black shoes have been with me for three years. I hear my voice laughing almost too loudly, physics notes are sticking out of my sketchbook, and I am well aware of that I am not average. I fight this opponent I have created and what she represents not because she chooses to live her life by the beauty standard, and not because I feel inferior. We are at war because no one outside of Tae Kwon Do class ever sees what she is capable of. They don?t know that those perfectly moisturized hands can break through boards or leave your head spinning. No one knows that those feet captured in three inch heeled prisons can leave you hurting for days, bruised where you blocked, bruised and bleeding where you failed to. I fight her because she is a symbol of how I tried to hide myself and my potential.
